What we love about the deer enclosure…

We love the joy that this place brings to visitors and local folk – especially families, and children in particular.  Several members of our team grew up with very fond memories of visits to the deer enclosure, so we realise it makes a real difference and has a positive influence.  A visit to the deer enclosure is like a little history lesson – a workout – and a quick embrace with nature all in one go.

  • Surprise - Many people take a stroll through the vast green open spaces of alexandra park and are totally surprised when they come across the deer enclosure.

  • History - The deer enclosure takes a step back into local history as it was included in the original plans for Alexandra Park in the nineteenth century.  This is why it is still here today, even the fallow deer found in the enclosure today are direct decendants of the original herd.

The herd’s diet

The herd’s ample diet is made of grazing and browsing the vegetation in the enclosure; feed pellets are supplied daily, as is haylage and mineral blocks. Fresh vegetables are also supplied on a weekly basis. The public are requested not to feed the deer.

The herd’s welfare

The welfare of the deer is overseen by two independent experts – a deer manager advises on day-to-day husbandry of the herd, feeding, safety, response to injuries and movement between compounds. A specialist deer vet takes annual samples to test for diseases and parasites and monitors the overall health of the herd.
