Before we get into this blog post, let me just make it clear that ‘The Hoff” has nothing to do with it… Thankfully! No, this is far more serious. Nightrider is a well planned event happening on Saturday the 9th of June 2012 and sets off at Alexandra Park N22 – in fact it has duel starting points at Alexandra Palace and and Crystal Palace, where cyclists will set off simultaneously. As the name suggests the event starts, and runs, throughout the night. Around 3000 cyclists will be raising over a Million pounds for their chosen charities. The Nightriders will embark on an exciting 100km moonlit route, if the clouds permit that is, through many of Londons most famous streets and places, passing 50 iconic landmarks along the way. Castles wish all the participants a safe and enjoyable evening. Hope the weather is kind!
The Olympic Flame – Tottenham N17, Wood Green N22 and Hornsey N8
On the 25th of July, as it nears the end of its 8000 mile journey around the UK, the Olympic Flame will be coming through parts of Tottenham N17, Wood Green N22, Hornsey N8, and finally heading up the hill towards the Alexandra Park area N22 – finishing with a ‘BIG’ celebration at Alexandra Palace N22. Now it may not be ‘everybody’s cup of tea’ but… it does give local folks the chance of a lifetime to line the streets along the route and support the extraordinary men and women that have been chosen to carry it on their extraordinary journey. What better way to share in the spirit and history of the Olympic Games whilst effectively adding to the history of our local area. A bit more about the Olympic Flame: The History… Ancient Greeks considered fire to be a devine element so they used to keep a [...]
The Harringay Winter Festival 2011
Welcome to the Harringay Winter Festival 2011, a new event for Green Lanes that is packed with activities for the whole family. This Festival is brought to you by the Green Lanes Strategy Group as part of The Outer London Fund action for Green Lanes. This same committee also delivered the Harringay Food Festival earlier this year which attracted more than 15,000 visitors on the day who enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and hospitality of the Green Lanes community. The Winter Festival will see Mattison Road (just off Green Lanes) closed off to traffic, and a variety of Christmas stalls will be setup in the village for the duration of the 2 day event. Before the main event, we will be illuminating this year’s new Christmas tree on Friday 9th Dec, at 5.30pm at The Salisbury – 1 Grand Parade followed by some drinks. All welcome. The main event will start [...]
London Property Can Cost a Bomb – Remembrance Day
By Steve Hatch As remembrance day approaches, it has got me thinking about what it would have been like in London during the war. The evidence is all around us, but we are often too busy scurrying around to give it much thought. I often turn up to value a property in North London, confidently knowing what a good Victorian house will sell for in that particular road, only to find that I am faced with a newer style property, built as an infill to replace a bomb damaged house. So for those that have never noticed this… you will have a terrace of Victorian houses and then a couple of odd ones in the middle! The other thing that will nearly always make me late for my next appointment is… when I get called in to value a great Victorian property in Wood Green, Harringay, or Tottenham, and my [...]
‘Fair Play’ to Local Harringay Residents
Here is another great example of what can be achieved when local folk communicate and come together. Local residents formed a group called ‘The friends of Fairland Park’ and have taken a public space on the Harringay Ladder, raised a staggering amount (approx £85.000) in funding, by approaching several charities and persuading Haringey Council to contribute the further funding required. All this collective local effort has resulted in the creation of a great ‘public space’ that locals are not only using, but are extremely proud of.
Recycling within Haringey | Now it’s ‘Easy Being ‘Green’
Remember the old days? Our old friend Kermit reckoned it was it wasn’t easy being green. What a Muppet! He even had a song about it. Well that was back then! Fortunately, these days things are a lot easier… Whether you own or rent a property locally, Haringey Council have some great recycling facilities with a dedicated team in place to respond to any enquiries.
Here’s your VIP invite to ‘A Garden Party’ in Hornsey N8
Ok… it is likely to be a relatively small event and her Majesty the Queen is unlikely to be attending, but it will be full of VIP’s, the ‘Very Important People’ who live nearby and made it all happen! It is a very important local event that marks a great local achievement and a great collective effort!
Nearly time for a ‘Garden Party’
Some time ago we were approached by a group of local Hornsey residents, Hornsey Parkside Residents Association, and Marcus Ballard in particular, who invited us to get involved with this ‘great community garden project’. After spending approximately 2.5 seconds pondering, we announced that Castles would be delighted to support the project, especially as they had done extremely well to secure some of the funding from ‘Haringey Council’ it was a great achievement, and an excellent example of what can be achieved when local people come together.
The election fight is over but, the ‘Scrap’ is yet to come!
So… whichever corner you were backing in the fight for No 10 – The big scrap (as far as the housing market goes) is coming soon… HIPs will get ‘Knocked Out’ in the first round!
